A year ago today, Salley Meyerhoff blazed through the the trails at Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu on her way to victory at the XTERRA Trail Running World Championships. In a post race interview, Sally mentioned that this race was one of the hardest races she had ever run. It did not appear all that tough as Meyerhoff blew away the competition sporting a skort and pink compression socks. Competitors were learning to not let looks be deceiving. Meyerhoff certainly knew how to have fun, but was also a fierce competitor.Meyerhoff died tragically on March 8th, 2011 in a cycling accident in Maricopa, Arizona. Winning the XTERRA Trail Running World Championships in Hawaii last December reinvigorated Meyerhoff’s enthusiasm for the sport. The EXTERRA organization is set to honor Meyerhoff at today’s race.
