On the final day of Ottawa Race Weekend, conditions were overcast and muggy for the over 5000 runners that took on the 42km challenge.

The battle for the women’s title came down to two African women; Haile Kebebush and Biruktawit Eshetu. At the halfway point the duo came through in 1:14:14 and remained together through 30K covering the ground in 1:46:31. Kebebush pulled away from Eshetu for the victory finishing in 2:32:14. Eshetu dropped significantly finishing about a minute behind in 2:33:15. Kebebush will take home $20,000 for her first place finish.
Top Canadians
Emily Kroshus of Calgary, AB was the top Canadian finisher and crowned the 2011 Canadian Marathon Champion. Kroshus’ unofficial time was 2:42: 27. The former Princeton runner and current Harvard grad student gives real meaning to the term student-athlete. Kroshus will take away $8000, $5k for being the Canadian Champion and an additional $3k for her 6th place overall finish. In her debut marathon, London, Ontario native Lanni Marchant was the 2nd Canadian in an unofficial time of 2:49:14. Closely behind Marchant was Myriam Grenon of Longueuil, QC who finished in 2:49:39.
