Book Review: Kara Goucher’s Running for Women: From First Steps to Marathons

Kara Goucher doesn’t hold back any details; in fact she makes herself incredibly vulnerable as she shares her personal struggles with running; including weight gain, injuries, disappointment, and lack of confidence.  Her insight into her most intimate trials with running convey Kara’s genuine interest in her burning desire to help her readers fall deeply in love with running like she has.Kara Goucher's Running for Women

“I love to run.  I am crazy, madly, head-over-heels in love with running.” (pg.1)

Kara’s running journey began at a local 1-mile race that her Papa (maternal grandfather) took her too.  She claims to have been so slow getting off the start line, that she was trampled by the other kids.  Clearly, Kara learns as quickly as she runs, as she has blossomed into one of America’s top female distance runners of all time.  Kara contributes much of her success through high school, college and now post-collegiately to her vastly different, yet evidently effective coaches.

Throughout the book Kara responds to fan mail ranging from, advice on strength training, to how she feels about running skirts, to how running high mileage can affect your sex life.  Kara’s candid responses are informative and often humorous!   When asked by a woman what to do about a boyfriend that keeps putting her down as she improves in the running scene, Kara frankly says, “Break up with your boyfriend!”.  Also scattered throughout the book are several of Kara’s favorite quotes from legendary runners and renowned coaches.

Highlights Include:

  • Sample nutrition plans
  • World’s simplest training programs from 5k to the marathon
