Alvina Begay is one of the lucky Olympic Trials Qualifiers. The opportunity to run with the Nike Oregon Project presented itself, and it sounds like her typical day is ideal for competing to the best of her ability in Houston. Begay also shares what she will eat for dinner the night before the race and what shoes she will be sporting.
Runners Feed: Take us through a typical day of your life
Alvina Begay: I wake up after sleeping 8-9 hours and have a small breakfast. I do my morning run and have a bigger breakfast afterwards. I relax, take a nap, get a massage, treatment, run errands or call my family in Arizona until my second run. After my second run, I do my strength exercises. After the exercises, I eat dinner and watch television until I fall asleep.
RF: Do you work full or part-time while training? If so, what do you do? If not, what has kept you afloat while you pursue your dream?
AB: I am not working at this time. The Nike Oregon Project in Beaverton, OR has allowed me to utilize their facilities and resources to prepare for the trials. Six months ago, I was working part-time as a Registered Dietitian in Flagstaff, AZ. The opportunity to train with the Nike Oregon Project presented itself and I could not say “no” to it.
RF:When the going gets tough on the 14th what will keep you gunning for the finish line?
AB: My parents will be in Houston supporting and watching me. They rarely get to see me race so I will do my best for them.
Rapid Fire
RF: What will you eat the night before?
AB: Most likely pasta, some chicken, bread and a salad. This is usually my pre-race meal.
RF: Race day shoes?
AB: Nike Lunar Racers
